ABOUT STEVE

Steve was born in 1959 and has always lived in the federal electorate of Hindmarsh. He and his wife, Wendy, have two sons, George and Alex, who continue to enjoy a close relationship with their nearby grandparents.

 

Steve has a long association with numerous and varied local organisations. He has coached junior soccer in the area for many years; he was a board member of the Glendi Festival for over 10 years; he has also served as President of his local Lions club and was presented with the Monarch award in 1999 for his long-term contribution.

 

Steve Georganas MP has had a varied employment history, working as a; taxi driver, underwriter for financial services, electorate officer and ministerial adviser to the Hon. J Weatherill, MHA (SA) 2002-04.

 

Steve has been the Labor candidate for Hindmarsh since the 1998 federal election, in which time Labor has increased its support by 8%. Steve won the seat of Hindmarsh in 2004.

 

In the electorate of Hindmarsh over 20 per cent of the population is aged over 60. This has spurred Steve Georganas’ MP interest in issues that affect the aged.

 

Steve Georganas MP is a member of the following House of Representatives Standing Committees; Health and Ageing, Communications and
Privileges and Members' Interests.

 

Steve Georganas’ MP was appointed Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing in 2008.

 

During his time on the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing Steve Georganas MP was involved in the following reports: ‘The Blame Game: Report on the inquiry into health funding’ and ‘The Best Start: Report on the inquiry into the health benefits of breastfeeding.’   Currently conducting the inquiry into obesity in Australia.

 

Additionally, through his involvement in the Health and Ageing Committee Steve Georganas MP has developed good working relationships with various stakeholders within the ageing and disability sector.

ABOUT HINDMARSH

An inner metropolitan federal electorate in South Australia, named after Sir John Hindmarsh (1786-1860), first Governor of South Australia (1836-1838). It was first proclaimed in 1903.

Hindmarsh covers an area of approximately 73 sq km in inner western Adelaide. The Australian Electoral Commission provides a full map of the electorate online.

Our main suburbs include Edwardstown, Fulham, Glenelg, Henley Beach, Kidman Park, Kurralta Park, Morphettville, Plympton, Richmond, Torrensville, West Beach and West Lakes. You can view a full list of suburbs on the Australian Electoral Commission's website.

The main industries of our area include aviation and tourism. Small industries and numerous sporting venues also feature in the electorate.
