West Lakes Rally To Fight Parking Fees
Date: 10 December 2009
WEST LAKES RALLY TO FIGHT PARKING FEES
Federal Member for Hindmarsh Steve Georganas will join a public rally tomorrow (Saturday, 11 December) in the fight to keep parking at the West Lakes Shopping Centre free from charges.
The rally, to be held at the corner of Turner Drive and West Lakes Boulevard (opposite AAMI Stadium near Radio Rentals) at 11am, follows Westfield West Lakes’ new application to the Charles Sturt Council for the installation of boom gates and ticket machines at the shopping centre. Julie Macdonald of the No Parking Fees for Westlake Shopping Centre group will lead the rally.
Mr Georganas said the shopping centre, as a community hub that included library, health centres and medical services, needs to remain fee-free for the many thousands who visit it every day for a wide range of purposes.
“It’s a slap in the face for the workers, shoppers, tenants and the community at large including the 10,000 people who expressed opposition in recent months by signing a petition,” Mr Georganas said. “Westfield West Lakes has a duty not only to make money for its shareholders but also to be a good corporate citizen.”
Mr Georganas urged residents to oppose the latest attempt to charge for parking by attending the rally as well as completing a Statement of representation outlining how paid parking would impact on them and lodge it with Charles Sturt Council by 17 December.
“First and foremost, though, we have to make our feeling known by turning out in large numbers at the rally on Saturday morning,” he added. “We have to make it loud and clear that we’re saying “no” to paying for the right to shop, go to the library, receive medical attention or just have a coffee with friends.”
