Draft Australian Curriculum Released Today
Date: 01 March 2010
DRAFT AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM RELEASED TODAY
Member for Hindmarsh, Steve Georganas today welcomed the online launch of Australia’s first truly National Curriculum for Kindergarten to Year 10.
All Australians will be able to log onto www.australiancurriculum.edu.au and see the curriculum for Maths, English, Science and History.
“What is great about having this first truly National Curriculum available online is that parents will be able to get on the website and have a say in what their kids learn at school,” Steve Georganas said.
The National Curriculum has been developed by experts at the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) in consultation with curriculum experts, teachers and principals.
“What parents will see when they log on is that ACARA have developed a rigorous, high quality curriculum that focuses on the basics of literacy and numeracy.”
Having a truly National Curriculum will be a welcome development for the 80,000 kids who have to move interstate every year. It’s hard enough having to contemplate a new school, let alone a new curriculum.
This will also be great for teachers, allowing them to share resources from state to state.
And it will be great for parents and the community for them to know exactly what their kids are being taught.
“I was pleased to see the new curriculum sets out learning as many remember from their own school days – learning to read by sounding out letters, learning to understand sentence structures and learning to understand grammar.”
“We promised a truly National Curriculum at the 2007 election and now we are delivering on that promise,” Steve Georganas said.
“This builds on our Education Revolution, which is already delivering the immensely popular My School website, new school infrastructure in every school in the country under the economic stimulus package and computers to all high school students in years 9-12,” Steve Georganas said.
“The draft curriculum is open for consultation until 23 May 2010. I encourage local parents and community members to log on and have their say.”
